Meeting of energy grantees in Sao Paulo

Representatives from 13 organizations supported by the iCS energy portfolio met for two days. The main objectives were to align the operating strategy, as well as to encourage collaboration between the institutions with the identification of opportunities for cooperation.

On December 18-19, a total of 25 representatives from 13 organizations gathered together at Arete – the Hellenic Studies Center, in São Paulo - for the meeting of grantees from the iCS energy portfolio, with the support of Luciana Martinelli and Kiki Mori. The main objectives of the meeting were to align the operating strategy of iCS and the portfolio and its effects on the relationship with the grantees and to encourage the collaboration between the organizations with the identification of opportunities for cooperation.

The iCS energy portfolio has a clear strategy for the three-year period 2019-2022. This basically concerns working towards increasing the representation of Brazil in the global energy debate, by filling in gaps and creating opportunities to generate resources for the subject. At the start of the meeting, the strategy was to present two questions to the group:

1. What factors of the current situation have an impact on the reduction of carbon emissions in the energy sector?

2. Considering the current situation, what opportunities and challenges are presented to the operations of the organizations present here?

Among the challenges was the internalization of the environmental costs, such as how to consider the actual costs/benefits of the sources, and how to confront the gas lobby and the reform of the electric sector. Among the opportunities, the highlights were how to make energy efficiency effective as a source, designing the ideal matrix for Brazil, and also the reform of the electric sector.

During the event, there was the construction of a matrix that related the form of operation (mission model) and the delivery expectations (drivers) of the iCS Energy Portfolio. Each organization was invited to identify and position its current actions, and to identify other actions within the energy field that were not directly related to these results. Four significant themes of cooperation were also identified among the participants: the convergence of knowledge and actions (such as a joint strategy to support congress with information and the construction of a digital library of knowledge); the reform of the electrical sector (the democratization of the decision-making in the expansion); Distributed Energy Resources – DER (such as the energy supply to the Amazon region populations with renewable energy and the revision of the resolution about distributed generation with energy efficiency); and anti-fossils (performance of an anti-fossil campaign).
