The lives of two young Brazilians were turned around in the first half of the year: Fernanda Tibério, from São Paulo, and Danilo Farias, from Bahia, received a full scholarship from iCS to attend an immersion program by the Youth Climate Leaders (YCL). This is an international and intergenerational movement designed to catalyze climate actions through training, networking and specific career opportunities in the field of climate change for young people. With the intention of creating the next generation of climate leaders, YCL offers a unique experience for the participants – as theoretical and practical journeys around the world. See the reports of Danilo and Fernanda, who took the immersion program between late May and early June.
"With the support of iCS, I took part in the second edition of the course for Youth Climate Leaders for the twenty-first century, and I joined the YCL-Youth Climate Leaders Network. During this time, I could discuss and access different content involving climate change issues, from climate litigation to climate business. I experienced a fantastic immersion in the final practical part of the course at the Institute for Ecological Research - IPÊ, with the active experience of the reforestation of native trees in the Atlantic Forest, the Projeto Semeando Água [the Sowing Water Project]. My experience as a young black person with low-income, facilitated by iCS, enabled me to access the YCL Network, establishing contacts and partnerships for the development of projects and actions in the area of climate change. With the participation, I have access to the YCL Network and the details of job vacancies, exchanges and even mentoring. This opportunity also meant that I returned home motivated and energized to think about the future that I, a young climate leader, want for the planet and for the future generations" – Daniel Farias, 26, from Caravelas (BA).
"During the course for the Youth Climate Leaders, we learned by direct contact with important professionals who work in the climate agenda on issues such as science, policy, outreach, entrepreneurship, justice and economy. In addition to the technical content and the experience of these professionals, we also experienced a strengthening of human capacities. Among the objectives of the YCL, is the building of a network of fellows that support each other and grow stronger in order to act on the climate agenda. Besides all this, I feel that my personal development evolved. The experience allowed us to recognize and improve our potential. I finished the course with the certainty that I am ready to act and work for the changes that we all want and need! As an environmental professional and also as a teacher, I now want to work in the area of climate education in different environments." - Fernanda Tiberius, 36, biologist, with a master’s degree and a doctorate in Ecology and Natural Resources, from Ribeirão Preto (SP).
