Disassembly of Conama reversed
Justice Rosa Weber, of the Federal Supreme Court, overturned, in an injunction, a modification in Conama filed by Ricardo Salles and Bolsonaro in 2019 that disassembled the organization.
In 2019, the then Minister of the Environment, Ricardo Salles, and President Jair Bolsonaro began to disassemble Conama (National Council for the Environment), removing seats from the civil entities and guaranteeing a greater presence and decision-making power to the federal government within the organization. In December 2021, Justice Rosa Weber, of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), overturned this modification in Conama in an injunction.
The organizations WWF-Brasil, ISA (Socioenvironmental Institute), Transparency International, Climate Observatory, Network of Non-Governmental Organizations of the Atlantic Forest and Conectas, were involved in the review of the government position. According to a report by Folha de S. Paulo, in a request to enter into the action as an amicus curiae (entities that help in the process with information about the case), the institutions stated that there was an interest by “the current Federal Government in unduly repressing the operation of civil society organizations and in curtailing social participation in public decisions.”
