The goal of the Land Use and Food Systems portfolio is to promote sustainable land use in the Legal Amazon decoupling economic growth from deforestation. In order to reach this goal, we work with civil society, the private sector and governmental authorities in four initiatives:

 

 Illegal deforestation reduced through economic and legal accountability over environmental violations.

 

 Legal deforestation avoided and forest restoration promoted through economic instruments and Incentives.

Undesignated public lands, protected areas, indigenous lands and private properties occupied under legal and environmental standards.

Local actors empowered to develop and implement solutions on sustainable land use.

2020

O Mundo Que Queremos


PORTFOLIO - Land Use and Food systems Period - 12 months Purpose of the grant: To access the perception of political leaderships, entrepreneurs and general population of amazonian municipalities about the effects of deforestation, the knowledge about the forest economy agenda and the opportunities for building consensus around sustainable land use. Politicians, entrepreneurs and samples of population of municipalities with different socioeconomic profiles will be interviewed




Coalizão Brasil Clima Floresta Agricultura


PORTFOLIO - Land Use and food systems Period - 12 months Purpose of the grant: To support the most important a network of actors from private sector, civil society and academia on issues related to land use/agriculture, illegal activities, and financing. The project will support organizational development strengthening and political articulation. For 2020, the network will prioritize advocacy actions to stop political initiatives that can lead to deforestation in the Amazon,




Imazon


PORTFOLIO - Land Use and food systems Period - 7 months Purpose of the grant: To support actions to combat COVID-19 among quilombolas in the state of Pará through donations of food basic baskets and incentives for the marketing of products from family agriculture and extractive activities. Thus, the project aims to stimulate income generation and avoid displacement of people, in addition to contributing to the conservation of socio-biodiversity in Calha Norte.

PORTFOLIO - Land Use and food systems Period - 7 months Purpose of the grant: To monitor the progress of the pandemic in quilombola and indigenous peoples and supporting direct emergency actions to combat Covid-19 in protected areas in the Amazon region.

PORTFOLIO - Land Use and food systems Period - 7 months Purpose of the grant: To produce alerts, based on scientific data and risk maps, on the advance of deforestation and fires in the Amazon region that could compromise air quality and endanger the health of local peoples infected by Covid-19.




Instituto de Manejo e Certificação Florestal e Agrícola (IMAFLORA)


PORTFOLIO - Land Use and food systems Period - 7 months Purpose of the grant: To contribute to the maintenance of economic activities of indigenous populations, quilombolas and family farmers in the northern of Pará state by adopting agricultural techniques that minimize the use of fire, reducing the deforestation of the Amazon region.




Centro de Estudos Avancados de Promocao Social e Ambiental (PSA/CEAPS)


PORTFOLIO - Land Use and food systems Period - 7 months Purpose of the grant: To support forest restoration and bioeconomy activities by training local agents to strengthen sustainable income generation initiatives with the involvement of grassroots organizations and community leaders in the lower Tapajós region, state of Pará.




Centro de Inteligencia Territorial (CIT)


PORTFOLIO - Land Use and food systems Period - 12 months Purpose of the grant:To access the accountability level of environmental infractions in the state of Para, as well as the level of effectiveness of the command and control actions against deforestation. The goal is to propose improved mechanisms of inspection and accountability of violators, to reduce the cost of operations and to increase the impact of command and control actions to reduce deforestation in the state.




Instituto de Pesquisa Ambiental da Amazônia (IPAM)


PORTFOLIO - Land Use and food systems Period - 18 months Purpose of the grant: To develop fire scar maps of the Brazilian biomes between 1985 and 2020, improving the database of Mapbiomas platform. The indiscriminate use of fire is one of the main vectors of environmental degradation, causing biodiversity loss, increasing the emissions and respiratory diseases. Mapping fire scars will allow to increase the level of environmental accountability.




SOS Amazonia


PORTFOLIO - Land Use and food systems Period - 12 months Purpose of the grant: To createan an observatory for environmental policy monitoring of Acre and, through advocacy, contributing in the prioritization of the socio-biodiversity conservation agenda at the state and local levels.




UFBA/UFOPA


PORTFOLIO - Urban Amaz. Period - 6 months Purpose of the grant: The Socio-spatial Study on Climate Change in Cities in the Legal Amazon aims to contribute to the revisions of the urban master plans for the cities of Belém, Manaus, Macapá, São Luís and Rio Branco. With socio-spatial analyzes on territorial ordering and racial, gender and social inequalities, in view of the commitments to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Agenda 2030 of the United Nations (UN).




Resistencia Cultural Upaon Açu


PORTFOLIO - Urban Amaz. Period - 6 months Purpose of the grant: Disseminate informational content on institutional governance and the electoral process (i.e. role assigned to the position); investigate the political campaign proposals presented by the candidates for mayor, identifying coherence and inconsistency between the plans and the limits of the attributions pertinent to the position; fact checking; strategic communication to strengthen the public agenda.




Inst. de Energia e Meio Ambiente


PORTFOLIO - Land Use Period - 12 months Purpose of the grant: To update and improve the infrastructure layer (transportation, energy and mining) in Mapbiomas. To generate knowledge so the new infrastructure projects be developed considering socioeconomic benefits and socioenvironmental risks. One also aims to elaborate a pilot-platform for historic data visualization and forecasting air quality throughout the national territory.




De Olho nos Ruralistas


PORTFOLIO - Land Use Period - 3 months Purpose of the grant: To produce reports and news, with infographic and cartographic support, about the historic of environmental violations done by candidates of local elections in Brazil in 2020, focusing on the 256 municipalities of the Deforestation Arc in the Amazon. One expects to increase the exposition of political bonds of deforesters and to support to the choice power of the electors.




Fundação Amazonas Sustentável


PORTFOLIO - Urban Amaz. Period - 14 months Purpose of the grant: To strengthen the socioenvironmental and climate agendas in the city of Manaus, the project will create a Public Policy Panel, which aims to contribute to processes of monitoring, participation, and formulation proposals on such topics. The Panel will present the monitoring in its digital and interactive basis, and it will also facilitate debates between public authorities, society, and movements.




Nossas Cidades


PORTFOLIO - Urban Amaz. Period - 5 months Purpose of the grant: To strengthen the network of actors and campaigns for environmental and climate policies in the Amazon, the project will continue to train activists in the region through the Mobilizers Program. Focusing on the cities of Belém, Boa Vista, Macapá, Manaus, and São Luís, the project will include the training of local mobilizers as mentors, developing an inter-regional leadership front.




Associação Wylinka


PORTFOLIO - Land Use Period - 12 months Purpose of the grant: To promote training and capacity building for the public sector to create, articulate and implement more effective and inclusive policies, focused on solving challenges and negative impacts related to land use. The proposal has the mission to support the development of projects of innovative public policies, with high adhesion and impact in the challenges of the Amazon public management.




Fundo Brasileiro para a Biodiversidade


PORTFOLIO - Land Use Period - 8 months Purpose of the grant: To strengthen the management and the governance of the Interstate Consortium of Sustainable Development of the Legal Amazon. The project will support the development of a governance model, policies, processes, routines and supporting the implementation. It is the first step of support to provide full operation capacity to the Consortium, including fundraising and execution of priority projects.




COIAB


PORTFOLIO - Land Use Period - 4 months Purpose of the grant: To support the Coordination of Indigenous Organizations of the Brazilian Amazon (COIAB) in its actions to combat and prevent fires in six indigenous lands in four states of the biome: (i) Tocantins - Xerente and Kraolândia; (ii) Mato Grosso - Parque do Xingu and Paresi; (iii) Maranhão - Arariboia; and (iv) Roraima - Raposa Serra do Sol.




IFD


PORTFOLIO - Land Use Period - 18 months Purpose of the grant: To implement solutions for the fair and transparent trade of local, healthy and sustainable agricultural products, which are using regenerative practices that maintain the standing forest in the region of Belem-PA. Actions will be performed of mapping, coordination and training in the territory in order to co-create trading models based on social technology that has already been tested in other regions of the country.




Pará Ciclo


PORTFOLIO - Urban Amazon Period - 9 months Purpose of the grant: To strengthen the agenda of sustainable urban mobility in Belém, the project proposes to rethink the city, with the active participation of civil society in the processes of monitoring and governance, mainly in the review of the Master Plan and the Urban Mobility Plan. It will involve, simultaneously, engagement with public officials and also urban interventions with a campaign on social media.





2019

CPI - Climate Policy Initiative Brasil


PORTFOLIO - Food and Land Use Period - 6 months Purpose of the grant: This extension aims to secure key wins to strategically position the climate change agenda and Brazil’s Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) in the current administration. These key wins include protecting measures to combat deforeistation and preserving the integrity of the Forest Code. Under this extension CPI will engage with federal and state goverment officials, legislative committees and decision makers.




AGROICONE


PORTFOLIO - Food and Land Use Amount - R$ 61.128,00 Period - 1 months Purpose of the grant: This is a supplement to an already approved grant, due to the exchange rate variation between the subsidy of the CIFF and the INPUT. The original grant seeks to safeguard the policy structure of the Forest Code and work towards a strong agricultural policy of low carbon.

PORTFOLIO - Food and Land Use Period - 12 months Purpose of the grant: To promote policies that combine agriculture production and forestry preservation, by increasing the influence of the Brazilian Coalition in the decisions of the executive and legislative branches.

PORTFOLIO - Food and Land Use Amount - R$ 150.000,00 Period - 12 months Purpose of the grant: To map, organize, and analyze data about the Brazilian production of food supplies, with the objective of providing a solid base of knowledge for public and private policies in this area, as well as for individual decisions.




ISA - Instituto Socioambiental


PORTFOLIO - Food and Land Use Period - 4 months Purpose of the grant: To combat and monitor forest fires in three indigenous territories, Terra Indígena Xingu, Terra Indígena Raposa Serra do Sol, and the city of Barcelos, by expanding the capacity of the indigenous fire brigades from Raposa Serra do Sol (RR) and the Barcelos region.




IMAZON - Instituto do Homem e Meio Ambiente da Amazônia (I)


PORTFOLIO - Food and Land Use Amount - R$ 480.000,00 Period - 4 months Purpose of the grant: To combat the appropriation of lands and encourage territorial planning in the Amazon, especially in Pará, which considers the public interest and reduces the risk of deforestation, by supporting a public communication campaign against unlawfulness in the Amazon.

PORTFOLIO - Food and Land Use Amount - R$ 20.000,00 Period - 12 months Purpose of the grant: To study cultures that are apparently distant from each other SELVAGEM gathers researchers in candid conversations, open to the public where they put forward their perspectives and knowledge about life. These conversations, skillfully moderated by AILTON KRENAK – a leading indigenous voice and one of the most important Brazilian thinkers – aim to shed light on the connections between knowledge deriving from different sources (indigenous, scientific, artistic, ancestral etc).

PORTFOLIO - Food and Land Use Period - 12 months Purpose of the grant: To prevent and combat the occurrence of forest fires and develop sustainable activities aiming at protecting the forest and renovating target areas that suffered from the fires, in two main areas: the Resex Tapajós-Arapuins and the National Forest of Tapajós.

PORTFOLIO - Food and Land Use Amount - R$ 471.000,00 Period - 4 months Purpose of the grant: To increase institutional capacity of combating and reducing forest fire through information and monitoring, particularly in five Conservation Units at Xingu Environmental Protection Area in State of Para.




IPAM - Inst. de Pesquisa Ambiental da Amazônia


PORTFOLIO - Food and Land Use Amount - R$ 490.000,00 Period - 4 months Purpose of the grant: To increase the protection of indigenous land and undesignated public lands from illegal deforestation and fires and to provide updated information about the level of illegality related to deforestation in the undesignated public forest in the states of Pará and Amazonas.




COIAB - Coord. das Organiz. Indígenas da Amazônia


PORTFOLIO - Food and Land Use Period - 4 months Purpose of the grant: To support and mobilize indigenous brigades and forest guardians against the current wave of forest fires in indigenous lands in Tocantins, Mato Grosso do Sul, Rondônia, Acre and Amazonas. This will be done by expanding capacity of indigenous people to prevent and manage the forest fire aligned with their traditional knowledge, and in cooperation with environmental NGOs.

PORTFOLIO - Food and Land Use Period - 4 months Purpose of the grant: To produce journalism focused on environmental risks like deforestation in the Amazon and labor abuses in the supply chains of Brazilian companies and multinationals operating in Brazil.





2021

Inst. Democracia e Sustentabilidade


PORTFOLIO - Land Use Period - 12 months Purpose of the grant: To provide legal support to the development and monitoring of administrative actions and applications in order to obtain data and to generate actions by public agencies in response to the alerts of illegal deforestation produced by MapBiomas. It is hoped to increase the effectiveness and the legal accountability of the offenders who are responsible for the deforested areas.




Inst. Centro de Vida


PORTFOLIO - Land Use Period - 12 months Purpose of the grant: To guarantee that all the 8,000 alerts validated by the MapBiomas Alert Platform in the state of Mato Grosso, up to December 2020, have some action of accountability taken by the agencies that are responsible for the environmental control. Mato Grosso has one of the highest deforestation rates in the Amazon, where the destruction of the forest is driven overwhelmingly by illegal practices.




Engajamundo


PORTFOLIO - Urban Amazon Period - 6 months Purpose of the grant: To conduct a diagnosis of the volunteer network of Engajamundo in order to understand the complexity of the contexts, local and personal realities, motivations and difficulties when acting on behalf of human and environmental rights. The analysis will enable a more strategic operation of Engajamundo and other organizations in the socioenvironmental sector that operate mainly in the Amazon.




Article 19


PORTFOLIO - Urban Amazon Period - 2 months Purpose of the grant: To expand the operation in the territories and connect actors of popular communication in the Amazon, the project intends to provide grants to groups and collectives that can produce and spread tactical content of mobilization in their territories and in a network, especially with the development and sharing of information of how to combat the pandemic and the multiple problems of the crisis generated by it.




Instituto Comida do Amanhã


PORTFOLIO - Land Use Period - 21 months Purpose of the grant: To create and to consolidate permanent labs of public policies to strengthen sustainable food systems to medium-size Brazilian cities, specially in the Amazon. The goal is to allow that food strategies be developed in a integrative, participative, data-based and encompassed complexity of food systems and its challenges, with support to public managers at the local level.




Youth Climate Leaders


PORTFOLIO - Urban Amazon Period - 3 months Purpose of the grant:To offer 14 scholarships for low-income young people and/or Afro-american and/or Indigenous people from the Amazon region of Brazil for the YCL Course - Climate Leadership for the 21st century, among April and June 2021.




Observatório do Marajó


PORTFOLIO - Land Use Period - 12 months Purpose of the grant: To strengthen the social mobilization in the Marajo Island, Pará, using data, reference of good practices, and methodologies to construct social technologies. The goal is to capacitate and to empower local leaderships to support and to demand for the development more ambitious and effective public policies to fight the socioeconomic crises and the climate emergency in the region.




Núcleo de Estudos sobre Clima e Saúde


PORTFOLIO - Urban Amazon Period - 12 months Purpose of the grant: To generate knowledge and disseminate information related to the climate and health in the Legal Amazon, the project presents a study that will identify and estimate the main health problems of the region that could be aggravated by the climate crisis. The material for the communication of the data intends to mobilize the interested actors and encourage actions in favor of better public policies in the Amazonian cities.




Associação Instituto Mapinguari


PORTFOLIO - Urban Amazon Period - 9 months Purpose of the grant: In order to strengthen and highlight the socioeconomic role of the Protected Areas and Urban Quilombos in Amapá, the project will diagnose the socio-productive chains of these communities to support the discussion using more consistent public policies, with local social, economic and environmental development. Along with the people and the territories, the project will provide for the creation of community plans.




Sociedade Paraense de Defesa dos Direitos Humanos


PORTFOLIO - Urban Amazon Period - 6 months Purpose of the grant: The 3rd solidarity campaign of SDDH aims to help 556 families in a state of social vulnerability via the distribution of basic food parcels, hygiene materials, financial support for the Defenders of Human Rights, the making of face masks, and information campaigns for the prevention of COVID-19 in the metropolitan region of Belém, and in the communities in Xingu, Tapajós, and Salgado.
